New Mexico [New Mexico]
a south-western US state on the Mexican border, also called the Land of Enchantment. The largest city is Albuquerque, and the capital city is ↑Santa Fe. It became part of the US in 1848 after the ↑Mexican War, and a state in 1912. The first atom bomb was exploded at Alamogordo, New Mexico, in 1945. The state produces many minerals, including ↑uranium, gold and silver, as well as oil and gas. Its tourist attractions include ↑Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands National Monument.
